Eight people joined me in Ystradfellte, Brecon Beacons, for a weekend landscape photography workshop.

Seven of us; Helen, Viola, Neil, Martin, Craig, Richard and myself arrived at the Caving Cottage on Friday evening and settled in for an evening of getting to know each other over a beer.

Malcolm and Amanda arrived the next morning in time for breakfast. We started early on Saturday morning with a lecture on composition in the landscape before heading out to a mountainous valley for the first photography session. Despite the rain, everyone dived into their assignment, some headed into forest, others photographed the stream flowing down the mountains, others looked at the rocks and trees. As I walked across the landscape, to visit my students and discuss how they were progressing and help them to solve any problems they were experiencing, I could see tripods and colourful umbrellas dotting the rain swept landscape. I was worried that the rain might spoil the session for them, but they each seemed engrossed in their photography and not worried about getting wet.

At lunch time we headed back to the cottage for lunch and a short discussion about photographing people in the landscape. The sun had taken over from the rain and we headed up and over the mountains. I had split my photography students into three groups and given them an assignment to do. We stopped on top of a mountain to work on the portrait exercise for a while, then continued our walk over the mountains, stopping regularly to make use of the changing landscape and light.

By early evening we had reached the cave entrance of Porthy Ogof, where the River Mellte disappears underground. Here we looked at the creative use of shutter speeds and composition. Then it was back to the caving cottage to back up the days images. Each person was asked to choose a maximum of six images from each of the two projects for viewing later in the evening.

We headed off to the Dinas Rock Hotel, a short car journey from the cottage, for a two course meal. Adrian, who runs the Dinas Rock, had laid nine places on a long table for us and was ready to serve the meal as soon as we arrived :-)

After the meal and all the plates had been cleared away, we looked at each person's selection of images on a large television screen, while enjoying an end of the day drink. It was really interesting to see how differently each person had interpreted the assignments and the images sparked discussion and another learning opportunity for my students, who were starting to think about the landscape from a different perspective. Then it was back to the Caving Cottage, a brief session of photographing the stars and a well earned sleep.

Sunday morning we got up early, well ok, very early - about 5 am. Bleary eyed students wrapped in coats and hats headed up the nearest mountain (which is just across the road from the cottage) with torches as there was no sign of day light yet. Unfortunately the sky was cloudy and the magnificent sunrise we had been hoping for didn't happen and we all got a bit cold. This was the least successful part of the workshop.

In day light we headed down the mountain for breakfast. I gave a talk on the basic aspects of photography;

starting with how a pin-hole camera works,

then explaining how the choice of shutter speed affects both the look of the image - subject and camera movement,

what the aperture is and how the choice of aperture affects the depth of field and its relationship to the shutter speed and exposure,

understanding and using histograms,

how the choice of A.S.A. setting affects the exposure and 'noise' and other techie things....

A large part of the discussion was me answering questions and helping people to better understand thier cameras. We also talked further about composition and ways of leading the viewer's eye through the picture to the most important element in the image.

With the sun trying to come out, we headed off to Sgwd Isaf Clun-gwyn waterfalls on the River Mellte. A really spectacular waterfall a few minutes drive from the cottage. Getting down the steep bank to the waterfall was a challenge, but worth the effort. I had given my students assignments to encourage them to experiment with their camera controls in a constructive way and further explore their ideas about how to compose and express their ideas and interpretation of the landscape through images.

Mid afternoon we returned to the cottage for a final discussion and at about 5 pm we each began our long journey home.

Underwater Portraiture 30th January 2011

On Jan 30th, following a short piece in a local paper and few posters that I had put up around the Charing Cross Sports Club, I photographed ten people underwater in three groups. Apart from working for baby swim schools, this was the first time I had offered underwater portrait photography to the public.

The first session had been booked by a family of five, who really got into the spirit of an underwater photoshoot, which produced really fun family portraits.

Then it was the turn of two young twins and their baby sister. The boys just wanted to have fun, diving to the bottom and playing underwater....

For the last session, I had three beautiful synchronised swimmers to photograph. The girls had come very prepared with several changes of outfit and a clear idea of the kind of poses they wanted to do.

Thank you to everyone who I photographed that day and to my assistant Charlotte....

Frosty Fingers

Frost had laid her icy fingers through Butter Wood in Hampshire. But by mid morning most of the ice had melted away - except for the puddles. Frozen, melted and re-frozen several times over the past few days, the puddles had become fragile thin layers of water and ice, where swirls and bubbles interlaced with sticks and seeds and dead leaves...

Our walk took us along the Basingstoke Canal, originally built in the 1790's as a major commercial route to link London and Guildford with Southampton . We discovered the Greywell Tunnel into which the Basingstoke Canal disappeared. The tunnel had been built as a shortcut for canal boats to reduce their journey by 6 miles cross-country.

In 1932, the 1125 meter long tunnel partially collapsed preventing canal boats from navigating the waterway and the canal fell into disrepair. Canoeists could still get through the tunnel until another collapse in the 1950's completely blocked it and created one of the best roosting places for bats in Europe. Like a cave, it's temperature hovers around 10 degrees throughout the year and never freezes inside, it's always damp and being gated at both entrances - is undisturbed - ideal conditions for bats.

The canal immediately down stream of the tunnel is gorgeous, filled with clear spring water and a forest of water plants. It's an area of outstanding natural beauty and a haven for wildlife. A stretch of water I really must return to with my underwater camera and photograph a series of split level images....

Having your photograph taken underwater is great fun and a unique experience. The portraits made during the session are very unusual and stunning. Thinking about and planning what you are going to wear for the photo shoot is also part of the fun. It could be a stunning floaty dress or a Karate-gi, a suit or your badminton kit....

The portraits are made in an underwater photographic studio, in the shallow end of a warm swimming pool. It's great fun and you only need to hold your breath and duck your head underwater for a few seconds at a time.

After the shoot, the images are processed to optimise the colour, contrast, sharpness etc. before being uploaded onto a password protected website. Here you will be able to see the photographs from your underwater photography session and purchase prints and other items.

A Boxing Day hill walk

With all the hustle and bustle of cooking Christmas dinner over, I decided that early boxing day morning was going to be set aside for a walk over the Malvern Hills. The weather on my phone looked promising, with a clear sky all night predicted and a cold, dry morning. The Midlands were still steeped in several inches of snow and I'd checked the moon tables and knew there would be a half moon still in sky at sun rise.

For Christmas and new year I stayed with my family in Worcester, it's only a few miles drive from Malvern, and I left well before first light. I did wonder how far I would be able to take my car before being stopped by snow as the smaller roads on the hills had not been gritted. My car crawled round a sharp right turn and up the steep, ice covered road leading to the Clock Tower car park in north Malvern. I couldn't get into the car park because of snow so parked in the street.

I began climbing the hills and night turned into dawn. Looking west towards south Wales, the landscape was a wonderful patchwork quilt of snow and hedges.

Fog quickly covered the flood plains, towns and villages below, drifting like cotton wool sheets above the landscape and softening the light, distant hill tops pocked through the clouds. The colours were so soft and subtle with light reflecting off the white snow and fog covering the rising sun.

The Malvern Hills are an eight mile ridge of rounded summits that contain some of the oldest rocks in Britain, wooded on some slopes, grassy on others, the ridge runs from north to south. The highest point being Worcestershire Beacon at 1400ft aprox (425m). To the west lies the County of Hereford and to the east lies the flood plain of the River Severn.

The Snowy Brecon Beacons

The drive from London on the M4 was easy but negotiating the icy, snow covered Welsh hills at night was a challenge. Sixteen cavers were making their way to Croydon Caving Cottage in Ystradfellte, a little Welsh village surrounded by mountains. Three were stuck half way up a steep hill. As I climbed up the hill and approached Caroline’s car it started to slide backwards down the hill towards me, with no one in it and the hand-brake on. I leapt up the steep bank and out of its way. One of the cavers, a girl who was planning to do her first caving trip this weekend, was standing on the far side of the car and pushed it into the bank as it passed her, where it stuck. Steve, another caver, arrived at the bottom of the hill. We attached a caving rope to the front of the stricken car and six cavers slowly lowered it back down the hill, hanging onto the rope to slow its decent.

Approaching mid-night, our three cars continued the last four miles as a convoy. We took turns to drive down each hill and up the next. Neil took his car first, then walked back to drive Caroline’s car. The cars were driven slowly down each hill, accelerating towards the bottom and up the next in a low gear, while trying to keep the wheels on fresh crunchy snow, rather than the hard icy stuff. Knowing that if we stopped our cars would slide uncontrollably backwards. We arrived in the early hours to a warm welcome.

Ystradfellte, in the Brecon Beacons is a wonderful base for caving, walking, wild swimming (not this weekend though), mountain biking and of course photography. Sunday the light was gorgeous, so instead of heading down the caves, Neil and I headed up the Ysgubor-Wen mountain towards the old kiln mines, careful not to step on the snow covered frozen ponds, lest they break. The rest of the country was thawing out and loosing its white blanket, but not here. Many of the old field boundaries that have been here since people first started farming animals are lost beneath the snow. With no grass to munch on, sheep and cattle stand silently waiting to be fed.

I love the stark contrast between isolated trees and the whiteness of the snow. We pass shake holes, which are steep-sided holes in the ground. They are often found in limestone areas and usually indicate the presence of caves; they are formed when the ground literally falls into an underground hole.

Baby Portraiture

Recently I photographed lots of tiny babies for Aquatots, a really cool baby swim school based in Cheltenham http://www.aquatots.co.uk/ We hired a pool and spent several hours photographing little babies. It was magical to see how they responded to being submersed for a few seconds, mostly relaxing and looking very comfortable being underwater. All the babies had been attending Aquatots swimming lessons and had practiced submersions before, so it wasn't new to them.

After setting up my underwater studio in the pool, expert baby swim teacher, Fiona Munt-Whittle, carefully placed each baby in turn into the water in-front of me. Previous baby photography sessions had left me feeling a little rejected as most babies burst into tears when they saw my diving mask and big underwater camera. So this time I attached windmills and small toys to my camera and strobes, which definitely helped :-)

Having invested in another very expensive underwater strobe with off camera cabling it was time to test my new piece of equipment. Gui Pinto offered to model for me and once my underwater studio was set up, we had about fifteen minutes to get these pictures. Thanks Gui - you're a great model and I'm looking forward to doing some more portraits with you...

Tompot Blenny

These little Tompot Blennies were photographed under Swanage Pier. I was using a 105mm macro lens which has a closest focus distance of about two feet. One little blenny, with a real bouncer-like attitude, found that if he swam closer to me than two feet I would back off. I kept moving backwards because he was too close and out of focus but he seemed to take delight in 'chasing' me away...

This rusty taxi has been underwater in a freshwater lake for the past five years. I photographed it recently while diving at Wraysbury dive center, near London. The visibility was quite good that day and as the sun came out, it reflected off the headlights giving the impression the head lights were switched on....

Freediving - static breath holding

Ever tried holding your breath to see how long you can hold it for? The freedivers seen here are lying face down in Iron Monger Row swimming pool, London and are completely relaxed and calm, while another diver stands nearby watching over them. Breath holding is a competition sport, called 'static apnea', and these divers were breath holding for 2 - 4 minutes, the current record is over ten minutes.

Static apnea can also be used as preparation for freediving - the art of swimming underwater on a single breath.

It was in November last year that I emailed Charlotte Griffiths, news and features editor of Digital SLR User magazine, suggesting a feature about cave photography technique.

I was surprised by her reply – she wanted to come caving…..

”We have a feature in the magazine called 'Masterclass' where I go out with a professional photographer from different areas of photography and learn the tricks of the trade.”

So a few weeks later, following lots of organising and borrowing of kit for Charlotte, she arrived at Croydon Caving Club cottage, Ystradfellte, in the heart of the Brecon Beacons, South Wales, for her first caving experience.

She quickly snaffled the two pieces of toast I gave her, got kitted up and we headed over to Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (OFD) Top entrance for the first of two days of caving.

See Charlotte's Masterclass article in the June ‘08 issue of Digital SLR User magazine, to see how she got on and what she learned about caving photography. But in the meantime, here are a few pictures of Charlotte's caving weekend….

This tiny formation is no lager than a small finger nail, look at the water drop and you can clearly see crystals just above it, from which the formation is formed.

These cave formations are called helictites, and are growing upwards. They are tiny, only a few millimeters long and no one seems to know how they are formed, although is is thought their growth is influenced by drafts flowing though the cave.

Stoney Cove, UK

Stoney Cove is the National Diving Center in Leicestershire. It was originally a quarry, dug out over a hundred years ago, from which granite was removed and used to repair roads. The quarrying ceased in 1958 and spring water was allowed to flood the quarry workings. It quickly become popular with local divers and waterskiiers.

These pictures were taken in the 'Escape Route' of OFD 1 which is the lowest of three entrances into the cave system, the entrance being at the base of a very steep hill.

The flat, wet floor seen here, is called 'flowstone'. It looks like a rough concrete floor, but is actually stone. It has been formed this way by sheets of water flowing down the rock walls and washing over the floor, smoothing the surface over thousands of years, washing particles over the rock 'sanding' it down and depositing minerals.

Caving in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu (OFD), South Wales

OFD at Penwyllt, near Abercrave in South Wales, is one of the UK's major cave systems. It's name Ogof Ffynnon Ddu means 'Cave of the Black Spring’ and was first discovered in 1946.

Cave formations are called speleothems although often known as 'pretties' by cavers. The creation, type and colouration of pretties depends upon the amount of surface water entering the cave, minerals dissolved in the water, the type of rocks in and around the cave and the cave environment such as air flow through the cave, humidity and temperature.

Below is a selection of cave pretties, mostly stalactites hanging down from the cave roof

The above stalactite is known as a 'straw' as it is the same width as a drinking straw and hollow. The water drop at the end of this straw, is about to fall having traveled through the straw rather than over it. Straws are formed from drops of water containing dissolved minerals; calcium carbonate and calcite dripping from the cave roof, leaving behind a minute deposit in the shape of a ring. Over time, more minerals are deposited on the ring and gradually a hollow tube forms hanging from the ceiling. Typically straw formation takes around a hundred and fifty years per inch. Straws are incredibly delicate and fragile, great care is needed while moving around the cave and photographing them to not touch or break them.

Porth yr Ogof cave resurgence

These photographs show the resurgence of Porth yr Ogof cave in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales. A resurgence is where water returns to the surface after traveling underground through a cave. These were further test shots using a D80 camera in an Ikelite underwater camera housing. Some utilise split level photography, where the camera is partly submerged, while others look towards the surface from below through 'Snell's Window', an optical phenomena, in which the world above water can be seen from below.

Experiments with split level photography at the entrance of Porth yr Ogof, a cave on the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. It was a very dull, rainy day. Dressed in a 7mm wetsuit with a hood, mask and snorkel I spent the afternoon swimming around the cold pool at the cave entrance with my digital SLR in its underwater housing. The housing was attached to a tripod and sank quite well - unlike me. I had a 4-kilo weight belt but it wasn't really enough to be able to sink easily and look through the viewfinder - my underwater handstands amused the local cavers....

Sailing the English Channel

A week aboard the Frigate of Cowes, a lovely 32ft sailing boat, which we sailed from Southampton across the English Channel to Cherbourg, Guernsey and the Channel Islands, back to the mainland and around the Isle of Weight.

This was my first sailing trip and was super cool ☺ special thanks to Adrian for organising it, Matt, Loz, Neil and Chris for fun, songs and teaching me a bit about sailing.

This is the second outdoor test using my camera in an underwater housing. This weekend I travelled to the Neath Valley in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales and photographed the RiversMellte and Hepste. Wearing a wetsuit and carrying the camera in its underwater housing, tripod, spare clothes, food etc. in a rucksack, I walked along the River Mellte, regularly slipping into the water to photograph it's waterfalls, stones, trees and whatever lay beneath the surface.

Sgwd-yr-Eira. A curtain waterfall which has been formed where the Afon (river) Hepste tumbles over a 50 foot cliff between high banks

This willow tree was photographed from below the surface of the Wey
Navigation, the camera looking up through 'Snell's Window' which is a
circle seen from underwater through which the land above can be seen.
The water was fast flowing, sandy and silty. This is the first time I have tried this and the first 'outdoors' test I have done using my Ikelite underwater camera housing.

Due to heavy rain around the country Shepperton Weir has all ten sluice gates open creating a wonderful 'hole' for kayak paddlers to play in.
